Sunsmart Guidelines
West Leeming Primary School has adopted a SunSmart policy to ensure that staff and students are protected from skin damage caused by harmful UVR from the sun. This policy is to be implemented throughout the year. The sun protection practices outlined in this policy will be applied to all school activities, including sports carnivals, camps, incursions and excursions.

This policy is to be implemented throughout the year. The sun protection practices outlined in this policy will be applied to all school activities, including sports carnivals, camps, incursions and excursions.
BEHAVIOUR
- The school will require students to wear broad-brimmed or legionnaire style hats whenever they are outside.
- Staff are requested and encouraged to wear broad-brimmed or legionnaire hats when outside.
- Children without a broad-brimmed or legionnaire hat are directed to sit outside the library in an area protected from the sun.
- The staff will be encouraged to provide positive role modelling of sun protection behaviour to the school community. Parents and guests visiting the school will be encouraged to adopt positive sun smart behaviour.
- Children will be encouraged to apply sunscreen prior to outdoor activity. Sunscreen will be provided for Physical Education lessons and Sport.
- Children will be encouraged to use available shade for outdoor activities and play.
- Students will be encouraged to wear clothing that is sun protective, e.g. shirts with collars and sleeves.
CURRICULUM
- Sun protection and skin cancer prevention programs will be incorporated into the school curriculum.
- Sun protection will be promoted throughout the year via School and P&C newsletters, assemblies, staff meetings and whole school activities.
- Staff and parents where applicable, will be provided with educational material on sun protection.
ENVIRONMENT
- Adequate shade within the school grounds will be provided for students and staff.
- Adequate shade will be provided for children and staff during sports carnivals and outdoor events.
- Sun protection practices will be applied to all physical education and sporting sessions.
EVALUATION
The WLPS Health Coordinator, staff and School Council will review the effectiveness of this policy annually.
They will
- Review the SunSmart behaviour of students, staff and where appropriate, parents and visitors, and make recommendations for improvement.
- Assess shade provision and usage and make recommendations for increases in shade provision.
- Update and promote curriculum material relevant to SunSmart activities.
